Project Description:

Enabling works associated with the construction of a new HVDC Converter station Project consisted of phased civils and enabling works, Lowbury’s scope was to clear the existing land of underground obstructions, in particular 2000m3 of heavily reinforced concrete, remove unsuitable surface material and form main future works compound and formation by placing approx. 250,000m3 of material around required areas of site, key task also include compacting placed material using a dynamic compacting machine and subsequently testing the compaction. The site had trace elements of asbestos and as such air monitoring was continually check.

Works Included:

  • Formation of contractors car park, involved earthworks, kerbing, surfacing & line marking
  • New surface water mains brought onto site
  • Foul drainage associated with the new welfare and office facility
  • Enabling works were undertaken prior to the commencement of the main contractor package
  • Undertaking finishing and demobilisation works which included foundation bases in the live substation, grouting, surfacing, fencing, structural steelwork, cladding

Scope of works :

  • Demolition of 2000m3 heavily reinforced concrete
  • Major earthworks involving the excavation of 250,000tonne of material
  • Specialist dynamic compaction and testing of formation
  • Construction of foundation for new contractors welfare facilities (suitable for over 400 persons)
  • Substantial drainage
  • Construction of new access roads & carpark and main access road
  • New Lighting foundation bases
  • New bunds and foundation bases

Site access was constructed by Lowbury and maintained at all times during the construction & civils process. All work were completed in line with client programme and incorporated into the overall project programme. Whilst onsite substantial additional work was added to our contract as a consequence Lowbury were retained onsite for over 2 ½ years.
